Sail To Prevail, The National Disabled Sailing Program, is the nation's premier sailing-based recovery program. Based out of Newport, Rhode Island, the program endeavors to improve mobility and independence by teaching people with spinal cord injuries how to sail. Each summer, the program serves more than 1,000 people with various disabilities in its fleet of five “Independence-20” sailboats. These specialized sailing vessels are safe for people with disabilities, and our instructors encourage each sailor to participate in tasks aboard, pulling lines and using the tiller to steer the boat. Sailing promotes social involvement, camaraderie and teamwork among the crew, a sense of self-confidence, and hope for a brighter and more adventurous tomorrow. The program consistently inspires spinal cord injury survivors to overcome adversity, push beyond their comfort zone, and live a more fulfilling life.
