A crucial thing to remember in your recovery process is that you are not alone. Even on the days where you feel as though nobody understands, there are people who have been in your position, and probably can relate to exactly what you are going through. There are a great deal of spinal cord injury support programs which offer you and your loved ones invaluable guidance and support in order to get through the tough times that often come along with spinal cord injuries.

Some hospitals and rehabilitation centers offer support programs for both inpatients and outpatients; sometimes even for people in local communities looking for support with their spinal cord injuries. Below is a list of various support programs, both online and in person, that may give you that extra support you need.

The Reeve Foundation Peer & Family Support Program(PFSP)

This group’s aim is to offer a peer to peer mentoring program for those experiencing a spinal cord injury. There is also information for friends, family members, and caregivers. You can gain emotional support and find local and national resources which may help with your recovery process. By matching you with a mentor of a similar age, location, type of paralysis, length of paralysis, etc., the PFSP allows you to gain wisdom and insight into the life experiences of the mentor.

 

Inspired Spinal Cord Injury Support Community

This is an interactive forum where members discuss any and everything related to spinal cord injuries. Members include survivors, spouses, family members, caretakers, and others who have a connection to the spinal cord injury community. Most topics are open for members and non-members to view and topics are arranged by category so visitors can more easily find information about the topic they are interested in. The website was founded by SCI survivors and fosters a positive and supportive environment while addressing challenging topics. 

 

Florida Spinal Cord Injury Resource Center (FSCIRC)

This is a list of Spinal Cord Injury Support Groups in Florida along with locations, dates, times, and contact information for each location.   

 

Rolling Inspiration. San Antonio, TX 

This group ofers peer support on the second Wednesday and last Saturday of every month from 12:30-2:30 PM at the Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hosptial. This upbeat group provides a place to connect and socialize with others who have exprienced catastrophic injuries. Recreational outings and social events are also planned on a regular basis. 

 

Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Ontario

This peer support program offers people access to trained volunteers who can discuss their experiences with you in a “been there, done that” format. They are able to answer with honesty, in a manner in which really addresses your questions, based on fact and experience.

National Spinal Cord Injury Association

This association’s website lists various chapters which share the same beliefs and promote the independence, recovery, and healthy living of people who have suffered spinal cord injuries. Divided geographically, it lists the addresses and times of meetings for people who share mutual interests and common experiences regarding spinal cord injuries.

North Carolina Spinal Cord Injury Association

This website lists various support groups, where people with spinal cord injuries can go and share experiences, gain advice, as well as guidance on resources. Some offer the chance to attend trips and outings, provide and partake in mentoring, and enjoy recreational activities.

Memorial Hospital, Illinois

This support group operates monthly and provides support and guidance for people with spinal cord injuries and their families and caregivers. By educating on SCI and offering encouragement through treatment, this kind of group is the ideal setting for people just wanting to socialize a little more with people in a similar situation.

Jim Thorpe Spinal Cord Injury Support Group, Oklahoma City

This group, which meets monthly, is especially addressed to people who have left rehabilitation and returned home. With the chance to discuss and share experiences, it allows people to share information and benefit each other from their wisdom and advice.
