5 Antibacterial Supplements for People with SCI

Fighting off bacteria is a natural part of life for every human being on the planet. For people with spinal cord injuries, they need to be extra careful as they are prone to more bacterial infections than most. While antibiotics can cure many bacterial infections, many bacterial infections are becoming resistant to their effects, which can lead to death.

People with spinal cord injuries need to take caution so they do not become resistant to important antibiotics. This is why more and more people are turning to natural supplements to treat minor bacterial infections. You do not have to continually take antibiotics when it is obvious they are not working.

There are natural supplements that have existed for thousands of years, a long time before antibiotics, and they still work today. Learn about five natural supplements that can help heal ailments related to having a spinal cord injury below.

5. Manuka Oil

Derived from the leaves of Manuka, a plant from New Zealand, Manuka oil has impressive anti-bacterial properties as well as anti-fungal and anti-allergenic, and it’s also great for insect bites.  One of the greatest things about oil is its ability to kill bacteria. It has even been proven to kill staph bacteria, which is present in many antibiotic-resistant wounds. If you have cellulitis on a frequent basis try this before the infection gets worse.

4. Hibiscus Flower

Whether you drink hibiscus or take it in a capsule, there are many benefits of hibiscus flower. It has been known to kill bacteria better than chlorine in certain studies, which makes it a great choice if you have chronic bladder infections. It also been shown to promote weight loss, boost liver health and contains a compound that could fight off cancer.

3. Turmeric

Turmeric is an earthy yellow spice found in Indian cuisine, and it has dozens of health benefits from preventing cancer to preventing Alzheimer's disease. It also has been shown to have the ability to kill bacteria, and it helps with chronic inflammation. People with infected wounds that won’t heal have successfully used turmeric powder to heal them. For anyone dealing with chronic UTIs or an infected wound, this is a great option.

2. Cinnamon

Another anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory home remedy is organic cinnamon, ie “true” cinnamon (Ceylon cinnamon). Cinnamon has the ability to prevent bladder infections in people with SCI. And for anyone suffering from Alzheimer's or Parkinson's, cinnamon has the ability to protect neurons. It also has properties that can fight both cancer and the HIV virus.

1. Echinacea

Known for centuries to have the ability to combat the flu and the cold, echinacea is native to America and has been used for generations to heal a variety of health conditions. This herb has the ability to boost the immune system, as well as fight gum disease, malaria, strep, UTIs, migraines and yeast infections.

The world is full of natural supplements, and there are many more we did not add to this list.  Clove, oregano oil, and garlic are also great anti-bacterial natural supplements to check out, as well as neem.
