There are [winter preparation tips](https://www.spinalcord.com/blog/wheelchairs-winter-how-to-stay-safe-when-temperatures-drop) for standard vehicles, and then there are a whole host of things drivers with a spinal cord injury must think of to stay safe in cold temperatures if their vehicle stops working. From the standard advice all drivers receive, such as checking your tire pressure, to more specific advice regarding specialized adaptive equipment, read on for our tips to get your accessible vehicle ready for winter. ### Get an Emergency Kit We've all heard of a [winter emergency kit](https://www.amazon.com/Lifeline-Severe-Weather-Emergency-Safety/dp/B00N509LHA) for your vehicle that you can use if your car breaks down. But if you have a spinal cord injury, you should also add medical items you may need such as extra catheters, lube, another bottle or drainage bag and any medication you may need if you have to wait for several hours. Also, if you are [hypoglycemic](https://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/diabetes/overview/preventing-problems/low-blood-glucose-hypoglycemia), which many people with spinal cord injuries are, make sure you have food with sugar in the car as well. Lastly, make sure you are able to reach the kit as well. ### Portable Phone Charger While most people have a phone charger that for their cars that they can plug into the cigarette lighter, you should also have a [portable phone charger](https://smile.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_hi_eb?rh=k%3Aportable+battery) you can use in case your vehicle breaks down and you cannot use the lighter port. These chargers don't require an electrical source to work, as they operate on battery power. You can buy these on Amazon for under $20. Also, if your phone has a removable battery, make sure to buy an extra battery for it. You should also be able to find batteries for most phones on Amazon. ### Top Off Your Fluids While this is a more mainstream tip, it is vital that you check your car’s fluids at the beginning of every winter season. This includes your anti-freeze, windshield wiper fluid and your oil levels. All of these are critical to keeping your vehicle in tiptop shape during the cold months, ensuring your heat works and that you can see in case the weather turns. Make sure to have your wipers checked too. ### Get Ramp Cleaned, Lubed If you have a van with the ramp or a lift, getting this serviced at beginning of every winter is something that many accessible vehicle shops offer, and at a reasonable price as well. They will check your ramp or lift thoroughly, removing any debris that may prevent it from working once the snow comes. What Is a Spinal Contusion?

Much like any other bruise, a contusion can cause bleeding from local blood vessels and inflammation which, rather unlike bruises on other parts of the body, can have serious negative impacts on the spinal cord itself. Because the “blood must clot to stop the bleeding”a bruise results from contusions also increase cardiovascular risks.

For example, the swelling a contusion can cause will often disrupt nerve impulses that travel from the brain to the body through the spinal cord, and the severity of this will depend upon the level of injury. Unlike a concussion, a contusion would not cause unconsciousness or a ‘blackout’, but instead cause the patient to feel a numbness or tingling in the extremities.

\n

A contusion can cause spinal compression, which happens when there is pressure on the spinal cord. This can go on to cause an array of physical symptoms such as loss of sensation in the feet, inability to use the hands and loss of sexual ability. It must be noted that not all contusions cause spinal compression, and not all spinal compression is caused by a contusion, although they do often connect this way.

Warning Signs of a Serious Spinal Contusion to Watch For

\n

Firstly, doctors will try and establish what area or limb the injury has affected. Spinal contusions most often “affect the upper extremities bilaterally and also sometimes involve the lower extremities,” according to Dr. Wong, an orthopedic physician.

\n

Symptoms include “numbness, tingling, [or] electric shock-like sensations and burning in the extremities,” (American Association of Neurological Surgeons, 2016). Generally falling into the category of “spinal trauma” there are many symptoms which are similar to other forms of spinal trauma and spinal cord injury. Below are some symptoms of spinal trauma:

Unfortunately, it is sometimes challenging to identify which symptoms are due to a spinal contusion, and which ones are the result of a spinal cord injury directly. It can sometimes require a few days or weeks for the body to recover from spinal trauma and reveal if any permanent damage is left from the accident that caused the SCI.

Understanding what a contusion is, and how it can come into play following a spinal cord injury is important in order to clearly appreciate your injury, understand your diagnoses, and work toward treatment and a prognosis. Doctors can sometimes use jargon that’s difficult to understand, so the more you can educate yourself about your condition, the more control you can have in your recovery and treatment.
