It could be suddenly more expensive, with the co-pays out of control. Or they could be deemed “not disabled enough.” And worse, this is a trend we’re seeing across the country. What’s a person with an SCI to do when they live in a state that’s [greatly limiting their coverage](https://www.spinalcord.com/blog/topic/medicaid) or eligibility status? ## It’s time to get creative; that’s what. Life is all about out-of-the-box workarounds and the solutions we’ve seen from people with SCI can’t be beat, even in the world of health insurance. One of the smartest workarounds we’ve seen is from [Jenny Weast, a C5 quadriplegic from California](https://www.spinalcord.com/blog/jenny-weast-quadriplegic-teacher-penalized-for-being-successful), who had her Medicaid cut two years ago due to an increasing salary at work. She refused to quit her job as a high school teacher, and as a result, she priced out of even California’s Medicaid Buy-In program. ### Fundraising Her level of injury makes her fully dependent on [PCA's ](https://www.spinalcord.com/blog/how-to-hire-an-amazing-team-of-caregivers)morning and night in order to get ready for work and to get in and out of bed. Without them, she cannot do her job or live alone in her home. Instead of looking to her family to help her with [caregiving ](https://www.spinalcord.com/blog/how-to-hire-an-amazing-team-of-caregivers)after her Medicaid was cut, the community at her school helped fundraise money for her caregivers, which paid for them for the entirety of last year. But even Jenny knows this generosity can’t last year after year and worries she won’t be able to raise the $50,000 needed each year to pay for them. If you can swing a fundraiser like Jenny, definitely do so. Unfortunately, not everybody has access to such a generous [community](https://www.spinalcord.com/spinal-cord-injury-community), and also this isn’t the most permanent solution. Even Jenny says she should talk to a special needs trust lawyer, which is something you should do as well when you find yourself in a similar situation. Special needs trust lawyers are adept at coming up with creative solutions to allow you to both [keep your healthcare and work](https://www.spinalcord.com/blog/topic/medicaid/), which many quads want to do. ### Trading Room & Board for Caregiver Services Another option is to pay for your caregivers by allowing them to live in your home for free; a type of [room and board/trading-for-work](https://www.spinalcord.com/blog/trading-home-health-aide-services-for-room-board) situation. While this isn't the most ideal since not everybody wants to share their home with their caregivers, it is an option that many people actually do. You can also search for candidates who are in nursing programs to be your live-in caregiver. Nursing students make great roommates. And the loss of caregivers isn't the only worry that comes into play when a person with a spinal cord injury suddenly loses their Medicaid coverage. Many people have to put their wheelchair repairs on hold, as well as repairs of other medical equipment. Nobody will want to fix your wheelchair if you do not have the proper health insurance, and this can be highly problematic when your wheelchair suddenly breaks. To be safe, always have a credit card on hand if you find yourself in a no-insurance situation when it comes to wheelchair repairs. This can be one of the scariest aspects of not having Medicaid. Our wheelchairs are our legs. What Is a Spinal Contusion?

Much like any other bruise, a contusion can cause bleeding from local blood vessels and inflammation which, rather unlike bruises on other parts of the body, can have serious negative impacts on the spinal cord itself. Because the “blood must clot to stop the bleeding”a bruise results from contusions also increase cardiovascular risks.

\n

For example, the swelling a contusion can cause will often disrupt nerve impulses that travel from the brain to the body through the spinal cord, and the severity of this will depend upon the level of injury. Unlike a concussion, a contusion would not cause unconsciousness or a ‘blackout’, but instead cause the patient to feel a numbness or tingling in the extremities.

\n

A contusion can cause spinal compression, which happens when there is pressure on the spinal cord. This can go on to cause an array of physical symptoms such as loss of sensation in the feet, inability to use the hands and loss of sexual ability. It must be noted that not all contusions cause spinal compression, and not all spinal compression is caused by a contusion, although they do often connect this way.

\n

Warning Signs of a Serious Spinal Contusion to Watch For

\n

Firstly, doctors will try and establish what area or limb the injury has affected. Spinal contusions most often “affect the upper extremities bilaterally and also sometimes involve the lower extremities,” according to Dr. Wong, an orthopedic physician.

\n

Symptoms include “numbness, tingling, [or] electric shock-like sensations and burning in the extremities,” (American Association of Neurological Surgeons, 2016). Generally falling into the category of “spinal trauma” there are many symptoms which are similar to other forms of spinal trauma and spinal cord injury. Below are some symptoms of spinal trauma:

Unfortunately, it is sometimes challenging to identify which symptoms are due to a spinal contusion, and which ones are the result of a spinal cord injury directly. It can sometimes require a few days or weeks for the body to recover from spinal trauma and reveal if any permanent damage is left from the accident that caused the SCI.

\n

Understanding what a contusion is, and how it can come into play following a spinal cord injury is important in order to clearly appreciate your injury, understand your diagnoses, and work toward treatment and a prognosis. Doctors can sometimes use jargon that’s difficult to understand, so the more you can educate yourself about your condition, the more control you can have in your recovery and treatment.
